| The major focus of
this workshop will be on helping children strengthen themselves and
discover more beneficial ways of coping with a difficult living
situation that often cannot be changed. We will explore ways of
providing a safe place for them to begin to heal their wounds at
their own natural pace, in the midst of an unsafe world that demands
more and more speed.
We will
consider and discuss :
• The holistic view of the
self-healing process this approach is based on.
• The physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of children
in therapy.
• The issue of short term and long term therapy and what can be
realistically expected of each.
• The various components of the methods used (relationship, milieu,
expressive therapies, family therapy) and the role that each of them
plays in the therapy process.
• Creating a nurturing and soothing therapeutic environment that
includes the beauty of nature and provides healing and harmonious
sense impressions.
• The use of ego-strengthening activities (sewing, food, gardening,
walking etc..) in combination with expressive therapies ( art
therapy, sandplay, play therapy, the use of masks, face painting,
musical instruments, storytelling, singing, photography) to help
children create and internalize healing images that will later
support the safe exploration of whatever issues they might be
struggling with. (Illustrated by slides and videotaped excerpt).
Participants will also be given the
opportunity to experience the many facets of the healing power of
imagery through the use of art, sandplay, sewing and storytelling.
