Training For Therapists

The Centre for Expressive Therapy offers unique learning opportunities for mental health professionals working in a variety of capacities (counsellors, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychotherapists, social workers, art, play and expressive arts therapists, family therapists, behavioural consultants, etc..). The courses are at a post graduate level and have been designed for experienced therapists interested in incorporating the approach and methods used in Holistic Expressive Play Therapy, An Integrative Approach to Helping Maltreated Children. Marie-José is particularly interested in mentoring therapists committed to learning and adapting her approach to healing within their specific profession and area of interest and expertise.

The Centre for Expressive Therapy is accredited both by the Canadian Association for Play Therapy, Provider number (#09-102) and the British Columbia Play Therapy Association, to offer continuing education specific to play therapy. The courses that are specific to play therapy may earn learning credits towards registration as a play therapist with BCPTA or certification as a play therapist and child psychotherapist with CAPT.

Participants will be provided with a certificate based on attendance. For participants wanting to count the continuing education credits towards certification with CAPT, a certificate of attendance will now require not only full attendance but also a successful student evaluation component in the form of an essay.

Each seminar will start at 9 am and end at 4:30 pm with one hour lunch break and a short coffee break in the morning and in the afternoon;  6 CEU credits per day will be offered.

Please visit their website for more details as to their specific requirements.

Registration and cancellation policy:
Space in the seminar will not be confirmed until payment has been received for each individual seminar. Cancellation must be received by telephone and in writing one month prior to the date of the seminar or the whole amount will be forfeited. Before that date, $100.00 will be held for administrative fees.

The content of all training provided is based on Holistic Expressive Play Therapy, an integrative approach developed by Marie-José Dhaese. It is holistic as it addresses the physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of clients in therapy. It is integrative as it incorporates a wide variety of expressive therapies, pays particular attention to the nurturing, sensory qualities of the milieu. It also takes into account the crucial role of the therapeutic relationship and engages as much as possible the support of whatever family system is available.

Particular attention is paid to creating a healing environment which offers a wide variety of expressive therapies to not only facilitate symbolic expression and transformation but also provide ways of creating healing images that support the healing process.

This approach is person-centered, in the sense that, always starting from the client's primary need, the therapist both follows and guides the client's process, introducing, as needed, structured interventions that combine the multi sensory gifts of nature, bilateral body- centered exercises, imagery and a variety of expressive therapies. The expressive methods used include:

• art therapy • storytelling
• sand play therapy • sewing and other fibre arts
• doll house    (wet and dry felting, knitting)
• puppetry • use of food
• masks, • gardening
• face painting • nature experience
• music • body-centered activities
• movement

All these therapies are accompanied by companion animals when appropriate.

These therapeutic methods which Marie-Josť has taught internationally for over 30 years were originally developed to help severely abused and neglected children in foster care. They have now proven helpful to all age groups for a wide range of issues. Marie-José’s findings have also been validated by the latest research , particularly in the fields of attachment, neuro-biology, and trauma.

an Integrative Approach to Healing Complex Trauma"

The training offered at the Centre is not only a time of learning, but a time for self-renewal. The size of the group (8 participants maximum) allows for safe, intensive and individualized learning. Participants have the opportunity to experience first hand all that is being taught: whether the nurturing and healing environment of Marie José’s playroom, the whole range of expressive therapies that are made available during the afternoon experiential, or the opportunity to interact with Dauphin, her present co-therapist who assists in the training.

During coffee and lunch breaks, participants can wander in the beautiful garden, sit by the pond and watch the birds that come by or they can choose to walk to the ocean, the forest of Rathtrevor park or walk around the Englishman Estuary, all a few minutes away from the Centre. Organic café au lait, herbal teas and fresh organic bread from La Boulange are served in the morning.

Each day the schedule allows for plenty of time to enjoy the beauty of the Parksville area (on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada).  Parksville is surrounded by endless beaches and rainforests.

Meals and accommodations are not provided but there are a number of restaurants in Parksville. Accommodations ranging from luxury resorts to the simplicity of a provincial campground are all within easy access to The Centre for Expressive Therapy.
